Engineering – Strategy to Influence Human-Centred Design for Maintenance
One of the most effective ways to prevent errors during maintenance of aircraft is through the aircraft design. Making sure items can only be fitted one way, not locating identical couplings side by side, using different electrical plugs that are in close proximity; all these are examples that help to stop maintainers make mistakes.
The Human Factors Group: Engineering, a sub-group of the Human Factors Specialist Group, is looking for some help from volunteers to develop a strategy that it can employ to improve understanding of the impact of design and the trade-offs that have to be made on human error in maintenance and then bring about beneficial change and error reduction. We envisage something like a six-month piece of work to outline how best to engage with aircraft design organisations and the actions that could be taken to drive change.
If you have relevant experience and understanding of aircraft design and would like to help with this project we would be delighted to hear from you. Please email knowledge@aerosociety.com for more information and express your interest.
