Isle of Wight Branch hosts a STEM event
The Isle of Wight Branch hosted a STEM event at the Isle of Wight Centre of Excellence for Composites, Marine and Advanced Manufacturing (CECAMM) on 17 February 2022.
Located at Whippingham, East Cowes, the centre offers specialised education and training for up to 600 students as part of the college’s commitment to the future skills needs of the Solent economy.
The Branch was able to offer the event thanks to the generosity of visiting speaker, Phil Spiers CEng FRAeS, who kindly agreed to present to the students his talk on ‘The Fall and Rise of Advanced Manufacturing’, in addition to giving a similar talk to Branch members in the evening at the main college facility in Newport.
Branch Chair Iain Young and Secretary Graham Thomas assisted Phil throughout his long day and were pleased to have around 60 students and staff from the centre attend the talk which was very much in their field of study.
Iain and Graham were able to say a few words about the work of the Society and to show a short video provided by Nicholas Davis, RAeS Employability & Skills Executive, explaining the facilities available to young persons in support of their career aspirations. Thanks are given to Martin Ince, Operations Manager for Work-Based Learning at CECAMM.
The Royal Aeronautical Society condemns Russia’s unjustified invasion of Ukraine and its subsequent actions. We stand shoulder to shoulder with the people of Ukraine, especially with our friends and colleagues in the country’s aviation, aerospace and space communities.
The Board of Trustees and Council have taken the decision to suspend the membership of all Russian and Belarusian nationals, companies and residents with immediate effect and remove access to our body of knowledge, as well as events and conferences until and unless there is a resolution to this grave situation.
The Society exists to share knowledge, promote free debate and champion the aerospace, space and aviation industries across the whole world. We are, therefore, saddened that we have had to take this action to protect our learned knowledge, our members and partners but the actions of Russia cannot be condoned and the Society must respond in whatever way we can.
