Name: Siva Marimuthu MRAeS, 30

Location: Nilai, Malaysia

Job Title: Senior Lecturer, Nilai University, Malaysia.

What inspired you into aerospace? Since childhood, I have been very fond of aeroplanes. Whenever an aeroplane flew over my house, I was on the street and watched the flight until it faded away from sight. I want to see what is in it and fly in it. That curiosity made me enter into this field.

What is the best thing about your current role? Sharing knowledge is a good thing. I am teaching modules such as aerospace technology, aviation safety, engine operation, and supervising many students’ projects at NU. It gives me a better opportunity to work with students and staff from different countries. The best thing is that I have the chance to develop a new programme called ‘Bachelor of Aeronautical Engineering Technology’, successfully.

What made you join the Royal Aeronautical Society? I feel recognised, globally. I was attracted by its monthly magazine. Every month, I share it with my students to spread knowledge in aerospace. I obtained MRAeS membership to widen my network connections.

What do you hope to get out of your membership and CEng registration? With MRAeS membership and CEng registration, I would like to inspire every student in my class and prove to them that ‘it doesn’t matter where are you from, you will be recognised when you keep on doing the right thing’. As a mentor, this recognition would give me more confidence to bring out the best in students. Additionally, this membership would help me to update my knowledge on the current events in aerospace.

What three items would you take with you to the Space Station? My family photo, camera and a fantasy book.

What’s your favourite aircraft? I like the Supermarine Spitfire, Grumman X-29 and Sukhoi Su47 for their different wing planforms but my favourite aircraft is the supersonic passenger Concorde.

Who is your biggest inspiration? I was inspired by Dr A P J Abdul Kalam, Former President of India. His humble social background, achievements in the Indian Space Research Organization, vision about India, kindness, and simplicity, collectively inspired me a lot. Although, he was a scientist cum politician, he travelled all over the country and inspired many younger minds until he died.

Piece of advice for someone looking to enter your field? My philosophy is ‘Think 1,000 times before you decide but once decided get it done’. If you are interested in this field, then don’t give up until you reach your destination. To become an educator, develop your skills related to both teaching and research.
