A guide to the aircraft, UAVs and armament of the Chinese air force, army, navy and police, together with a look at the Chinese order of battle and prospects for the future.

American Secret Projects 4: bombers, attack and antisubmarine aircraft 1945-1974 by Tony Buttler, Crecy, 2021, 392pp.

The latest revision of Tony Buttler’s series includes profiles of fighters and bombers designed for the USAF and US Navy, including supersonic and close air support aircraft. The well-illustrated volume includes a good selection of three-view drawings.

English Electric Lightning: genesis & projects by T Wilson, Tempest Books, 2021, 149pp.

This book examines how the aircraft evolved, focusing on the procurement process and the factors that drove decisions about the aircraft configuration and its weapon system, and explores how other procurement programmes influenced the aircraft.

Lockheed Constellation: A History by Graham M Simons, Air World, 2021, 318pp.

Explores the design, development and service of the civil and military versions of the Lockheed Constellation airliner, known affectionately as the ‘Connie’. Appendices list variants and the survivors.

Douglas DC-3/C-47 in Latin American military service by D Hagedorn and Mario Overall, Crecy, 2021, 344pp.

Histories of the aircraft’s service in South America, notably in the service of the of the air forces of Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Guatemala and Mexico, together with US operations in the region. As well as giving a description of each country’s use of the aeroplane, it also gives individual histories of each aircraft.

Contains a selection of Air Publications covering the Merlin engine and piloting the Spitfire.

Sukhoi Su-25: battle-hardened Frogfoot by Y Gordon and D Komissarov, Hikoki Publications, 2020, 458pp.

Starting with a review of the competition, it then describes the testing and development of the aircraft, before giving a very detailed view of the aircraft structure and the wide variety of weapons that the aircraft is capable of carrying. It also describes the aircraft’s involvement in various battlefield actions and then discusses its service with the various export customers.

Scottish Aviation Bulldog: trainer for the world by T Wenham, Air-Britain, 2019, 104pp.

A history of the design, development and production of the aircraft and its variants. It also describes its service in the RAF and gives short histories of each aircraft produced.

British military test and evaluation aircraft: the golden years by M V Lowe, Pen and Sword Aviation, 2018, 72pp.

Containing over 50 pages of full-colour profiles and plan views primarily aimed at modellers, the book also provides a brief history of the development of test and evaluation aircraft in that era.

The Merlin EH(AW) 101: from design to front line by Rich Pittman, Amberley, 2017, 96pp.

Designed by the European Helicopter Industries (EHI) partnership during the 1980s, initially as a naval helicopter to help combat the threat of an attack from Soviet missile submarines, the Merlin has evolved into a multirole helicopter with a key role in search and rescue (SAR) operations. The well-illustrated book explores the story of the aircraft, from design to front line.

On Atlas’ Shoulders: RAF Transport Projects Since 1945 by Chris Gibson, Crecy, 2016, 272pp.

Describes how the lessons of war were absorbed into a number of design studies and aircraft projects. The Mounting Base strategy followed with proposals for long-range transports while at the opposite end of the scale, liaison and observation aircraft, such as the Pioneer were soon overtaken by the helicopter. It also explores how the RAF developed their transport force from the late Sixties to today’s precision delivery of equipment to forward operating bases in Afghanistan and beyond.

Black box Canberras: British test and trial Canberras 1951-1994 by D Forster, Hikoki Publications, 2016. 256pp.

Explores the English Electric Canberra’s 46 years of service as a test and trials aircraft for government research establishments, military units and military defence contractors on a vast range of tasks, including engines, airborne radars, reconnaissance sensors, aircrew equipment for the UK stealth programme and weaponry.

Battle flight: RAF air defence projects since 1945 by Chris Gibson, Crecy, 2012, 208pp.

An examination of the proposed post-war defence systems, including interceptor aircraft and their weaponry, support aircraft, radar systems, early warning systems, anti-ballistic systems and air defence artillery.
